Lavern Kirk White, 101

September 9, 1923  –  November 6, 2024

Hazel Lavern Goggans Kirk White passed away peacefully on November 6, 2024, at the age of 101 in Houston, Mississippi. Born on September 9, 1923, in Union County, Mississippi, Lavern was a beacon of light and love to all who knew her.

Lavern was the cherished daughter of the late Oscar and Maggie Gafford Goggans. She was preceded in death by her beloved first husband, “Coot” Kirk, her second husband, Perry White, one brother, and five sisters. Her legacy of love and faith lives on through her devoted daughter, Rexie Kirk Mann, her son, Arthur Scott Kirk, her sister, Eula Campbell, her three adoring grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren who will continue to be inspired by her life.

Lavern’s professional journey was as diverse as it was impressive. She was a talented and licensed cosmetologist who owned and operated her beauty salon for over 18 years. Her entrepreneurial spirit later led her to become a general contractor, where she skillfully built several houses in and around New Albany. However, it was her passion for Southern Gospel Music that truly defined her. Lavern was a well-known composer, having published over 60 songs, and she traveled extensively across Mississippi and beyond, promoting the music she loved and the message of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Music was a constant thread throughout Lavern’s life. She was part of several gospel trios, initially with her siblings and later with her children. Her musical talents were further showcased as she served as the pianist and a Sunday School teacher at Bethel Baptist Church for many years, where she was a dedicated member. Lavern’s love for gospel music was only matched by her commitment to her faith. She enjoyed writing and singing gospel music, and she never hesitated to ask others about their salvation, demonstrating her deep concern for their spiritual well-being.

Those who knew Lavern will remember her as a loving and faith-filled individual who approached everyone she met with a friendly demeanor. Her unwavering faith was evident in every aspect of her life, and she was a very faithful Christian who lived her beliefs through her actions and words. Lavern’s influence extended far beyond her immediate circle, touching the lives of many through her music, her work, and her steadfast devotion to her faith.

Lavern’s life was a testament to the power of love and faith. Her warm presence and the melodies she created will resonate with those who were fortunate enough to have been part of her journey. As we bid farewell to Lavern, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of purpose, passion, and an enduring legacy of faith and love.

In her century of life, Lavern witnessed and contributed to countless changes in the world around her, yet her core values remained constant. She was a pillar in her community, a source of strength and inspiration for her family, and a friend to all. Her memory will be treasured, and her life’s work will continue to inspire future generations.

Lavern’s family takes comfort in knowing that she is now at peace, reunited with her loved ones who have gone before her, and resting in the eternal love of the God she so fervently served. Her life’s melody will continue to play in the hearts of those she touched, and her spirit will be felt in every note of the gospel music she so dearly loved
