The angels took Mattie Laverne Wooley Gilliam, 85, home to be with her husband and loved ones in heaven in the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 21, 2019. She was born September 15, 1933 in Somerville, TN to Price Wooley and Fannie Austin Wooley Wright.
She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was loved by all that knew her. She was a charter member of Northside Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a hairdresser and was owner and operator of Northside Beauty Salon for thirty-seven years. She loved to quilt and embroidery, and made each of her children a special quilt. In her later life as her health failed, she enjoyed Search-a-Word books and spending time with her great grandson, Alex.
Funeral services will be at 2:00p.m. Friday, May 24, 2019 at United Funeral Service with Bro. James Wells officiating. Burial will be at Glenfield Memorial Park. United Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.
She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Deere (Mike), Brenda Minser (Jim) and Kay Rooker (Frank), all of New Albany; one son, Terry Riley (Vickie) of Ecru; a special granddaughter, Smith Bonds of Olive Branch; three brothers, Larry Wooley of Frazier, TN, Sydney Wright and Ural Wright, both of New Albany; eight grandchildren: Steve Rooker, Nicki Rooker, Heather Minser, Jamie Minser, Trey Minser, Tammy Fuller, Chris Nanney and Angela Nanney; eight great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lee Earl Gilliam; a daughter, Cathy Nanney; six brothers, James Wooley, Robert Wooley, Roy Gene Wooley, Billy Wooley, Junior Wooley and John Lee Wooley; a sister, Lucille Cronin; and two grandsons, Thomas and Carlas Nanney.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Hall, Terry Riley, Hollis Rakestraw, Mike Deere, Jim Minser, Trey Minser, Frank Rooker, Jacob Murrah and Brad Bonds.
Visitation will be on Friday, May 24, 2019 from 12:00p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
