Malcolm Massengill, 73
November 25, 1951 – February 21, 2025
James Malcolm Massengill, fondly known as Malcolm by his friends and Gramps by his loved ones, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on November 25, 1951, in New Albany, Mississippi, to Lawrence Malcolm Massengill and Bonnie Jewel Taylor Massengill.
He grew up in Hickory Flat, MS. After graduating from Hickory Flat High School in 1969, and attending Northwest, Malcolm followed the family tradition and took to the roads, making a lifelong career as a devoted truck driver. Beginning with Massengill Trucking, the family business in Hickory Flat, and eventually continuing his journey at Walmart, he found joy and purpose behind the wheel, a testament to the deep-rooted love for trucking that coursed through his veins. Malcolm also served six years in the Army National Guard from 1971-1977.
Malcolm will be lovingly remembered by his cherished family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Teresa Alberson Massengill, his adored daughter, Sallie Massengill Blair-Messer and her husband Matthew, and his very special grandsons, Ethan Blair and Eli Blair, who brought immense joy and pride to his life. His siblings, Mark Massengill (Donna), Michael Massengill (Lisa), and sister Molly Massengill Palmer (Josh), will hold dear the memories of their brother’s adventurous spirit and loving nature. He loved all his nieces, nephews, and cousins. Malcolm now reunites in peace with his late parents, Lawrence and Jewel, and his mother-in-law, Carneil Akin Meisel, who preceded him in death.
A man of many interests, Malcolm was known for his love of grilling and the collection of gadgets that accompanied the culinary art. He was an avid gun collector, a hobby that displayed his passion for craftsmanship and history. His dexterity extended to tinkering and fixing, a skill he passed on to those around him. Above all, Malcolm was a devoted “girl Dad” to Sallie, and relished every moment spent with his grandsons. As a mentor, he instilled values, wisdom, and the warmth of his love in Ethan and Eli’s lives.
Those who knew Malcolm can attest to his loving nature, his adventurous spirit, and his passionate approach to life. His presence was a source of strength and joy to his family, and his guidance was a compass for the many lives he touched.
Malcolm’s legacy is one of enduring love and the beauty of a life well-lived. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take solace in the countless memories he has gifted us. His laughter, stories, and the sheer force of his love will forever echo in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Malcolm’s life will be celebrated by his family and friends, March 1, 2025 from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm at United Funeral Service. His journey on the open road has come to a rest, but the paths he has paved in the lives of his loved ones will continue to guide them. Gramps will be deeply missed, but his spirit will remain an everlasting presence in the lives of his family.
