Mark David Crates, 64

March 5, 1961 – March 23, 2025

Mark David Crates, 64, of Oxford, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice. He was born on March 5, 1961, in California to David and Lorrena Whitely Crates.

Mark is survived by his loving mother, Lorrena; his wife, Ellen Crates; his beloved daughters, Chrystal Velasquez, Dareen Sharp, Victoria Sharp, and Cyndall Hill; his cherished sons, Lance Miller and Michael Sharp; his sister and lifelong friend, April McCullough; 21 adored grandchildren; five precious great-grandchildren; and his niece, Wendy McCullough, with whom he shared a special bond. He was preceded in death by his father, David Crates; his grandparents, Glen and Robena Whiteley; his aunt and uncle, Jim and Barbara Crates; and his cousins, Robert Hencley and Darla Mae Edwards.

Mark was an adventurer at heart, always drawn to the beauty of the outdoors. He found peace wandering the woods, a cup of coffee in hand, taking in the wonders of nature. His curiosity knew no bounds, leading him to study both the vastness of space and the intricate details of the world around him. He would howl with the wolves and hoot with the owls, embracing the wild spirit within him.

A man of dignity and kindness, Mark carried himself with respect and warmth. He proudly served his country in the Army and was also a Cub Scout in his youth. His early years were filled with exploration—hiking, camping, boating, fishing, and discovering fossils alongside his sister, April. Though life took him to many places, he always held a deep affection for Shell Knob, Missouri, a place he considered home.

Mark took immense pride in being a father, finding joy in guiding and loving his children. He had a passion for collecting and polishing rocks, marveling at the beauty revealed through transformation. Animals played an important role in his life, starting with his first dog, Corck, and continuing with the many unique pets he cared for over the years.

His imagination was boundless, a trait that shone through in the imaginary adventures he created with his sister. He possessed many hidden talents, including square dancing, a tradition instilled in him by his parents. His special relationship with his niece Wendy was one of laughter and love, as he could always bring a smile to her face, no matter the day.

Mark was deeply loved by his family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, adventure, and kindness. He will be dearly missed.
