Mary Coleman Yates, 94

January 20, 1930 – July 12, 2024

Mary Coleman Yates, a beloved member of the Cotton Plant community, passed away on July 12, 2024, at the age of 94. Born on January 20, 1930, in New Albany, MS, Mary was a dedicated and hardworking wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend who touched the lives of many. Most remember Mary’s late husband, Roy, who gave her the lifelong nickname of Sugee, which rang throughout for almost 70 years.

While raising four children, Mary dedicated over fifty years of service to the Bank of New Albany. Her commitment and dedication earned her the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients. From this, Mary will always be remembered for her kind heart, love for her family, and unwavering spirit. When she was not working or completing motherly duties, Mary’s favorite hobbies included sewing, gardening, quilting, and canning. All of which she insisted on doing even as her body and mind struggled to keep up. She loved to stay busy and always had a project on hand. Her passion for staying active and engaged inspired those around her, especially her family who continue the same activities today.

Nothing brought Mary more joy than her family. She cherished every moment spent with her children and grandchildren and never shied away from a moment to support them in all of their endeavors. Many have heard the voice of Mary cheering or yelling when the time was needed.

Lastly, Mary loved her church, Bethlehem Church of New Albany, where she found

solace and a sense of community. Her presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She is survived by two daughters, Lisa Williamson (Bobby) of New Albany and Janice McConnell (Mike) of Georgia; two sons, Ronnie Yates (Vaughnda) and Hugh Yates (Nancy) both of New Albany; one sister, Doris Gregory of New Albany; twelve grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.
