Max Stephens, 91

Saltillo – Max Stephens, 91, died on Friday, September 11, 2026. He was born on Thursday, January 10, 1935, to Era Mae and William Elbert Stephens.

Max dedicated 44 years of his life to working at Tombigbee Electric Power Association, where he built his career and became a familiar face to many. He was a longtime member of Saltillo Methodist Church and enjoyed being involved in the community around him. Max was a sportsman at heart and enjoyed watching softball along with any kind of ballgame. He loved the mountains and spending time there. He also had a deep appreciation for car shows and antique cars. These simple things brought Max joy and gave him plenty of stories to share with those around him.

More than anything, Max will be remembered for the gentle and loving man he was. He never met a stranger and had a way of making everyone around him feel welcome and cared for. His kindness was genuine, and those who met Max often walked away feeling loved. His greatest joy was his family, and his 68 year marriage to his beloved wife, Frances, was a beautiful testament to the love and devotion they shared.

Max is survived by his loving wife, Frances Stephens; daughter, Lisa McCarley (Danny); grandchildren, Matt McCarley (Amanda) and Scott McCarley (Anna); great-grandchildren, Anna Grace Dulaney, Sarah Dulaney, Lynley McCarley, Parker McCarley, Olivia McCarley, and James Henry McCarley; sisters, Myra Soden and Mattie Ann Ricketts; brothers, Sonny Stephens and Jerry Stephens.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Era Mae and William Elbert Stephens; and brother, Merwin Stephens.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Monday, September 14, 2026, at Pegues, Saltillo.

A funeral service honoring Max’s life will be at 11 a.m. Monday, September 14, 2026, at the Saltillo Chapel of Pegues Funeral Directors with Rev. Tim Green officiating. Burial will follow at Saltillo Cemetery.
