Mike Burks, 65
January 27, 1960 – March 4, 2025
William Michael “Mike” Burks, a cherished husband, father, brother, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his residence in New Albany, MS, on March 4, 2025, at the age of 65. Born on January 27, 1960, in New Albany, Mike was a man whose life was defined by his unwavering work ethic, his love for his family and the outdoors, and his boundless kindness.
Mike graduated from New Albany High School, where he formed lifelong friendships and laid the foundation for his future. He dedicated many years of service to R&S Haulers, Martin Marietta, and Steel Con as a skilled heavy equipment operator. Even through his illness, Mike never complained and continued to be a hard worker, earning the respect and admiration of all who knew him.
He shared a beautiful life with his loving wife, Lisa Raines Burks, and together they raised their son, Joseph Clabe Burks, who married Audrey, adding joy to Mike’s life. Mike was a family man through and through, and his love for his family was evident in every action and every word. He was a son to Ruby Hardy Burks, a brother to Barbara Owens (Benny) and Brenda Hodges, and a brother-in-law to Melody Thompson (Dennis Bynum). His brother, Richard Burks (Anna), shared many fond memories with him. Mike’s father, William Hershal Burks, preceded him in death, leaving a legacy of strength and love that Mike carried forward.
Mike’s three grandsons, Jasper Huck, Maverick Lewis, and William Hace Burks, were the apple of his eye. He treasured every moment spent with them and imparted wisdom and laughter in equal measure. His role as a grandfather was one he embraced with all his heart, and his grandsons will carry his memory and teachings with them always. Mike is survived by a host of nieces and nephews who will miss his guidance and gentle teasing. His family, a testament to the love he so freely gave, will continue to honor his memory by living out the values he embodied: hard work, compassion, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.
An avid sportsman, Mike found solace and joy in the great outdoors. He was often found squirrel hunting with his loyal dog, Red, or patiently waiting in a deer stand, fully immersed in the tranquility of nature.
Mike’s huge heart and his propensity to help others were legendary. He was always the first to offer assistance, whether it was a kind word, a helping hand, or a thoughtful gesture.
