Mississippi Farm Bureau honors Congressman Trent Kelly in New Albany
New Albany, MS- Congressman Trent Kelly received a special award from the Mississippi Farm Bureau Tuesday night in New Albany.
Kelly, who represents Mississippi’s First Congressional District, received the Farm Bureau’s “Friend of Agriculture Award” during a dinner meeting at New Albany’s Magnolia Civic Center.
He was accompanied at the dinner by his wife Sheila.
About 75 people representing 10 counties attended the meeting and enjoyed a catered dinner. Among those present were Farm Bureau members, a few of whom were from Alabama. Mississippi Farm Bureau officials including state president Mike McCormack were present as were members of Congressman Kelly’s staff.
Terry Norwood of the Union County Farm Bureau said the award is given every two years to a U.S. congressman or senator, who is friendly to agriculture. Kelly is a member of the House Agriculture Committee and the Small Business Committee. Norwood said the award is usually presented in Washington, D.C., but that Kelly wanted to receive it in his home district.
Kelly was elected to Congress last year in a special election held after Congressman Alan Nunnelee died just a month into the two-year term. Kelly, a Republican, faces what is believed to be only token opposition from a Democratic Party nominee in next week’s general election.
The Mississippi Farm Bureau is the largest general farm organization in the state. It has members in all 82 Mississippi counties, a total membership of 192-thousand farm families.
