Municipal candidates to speak at courthouse May 23rd

Candidates in the June 6th New Albany municipal elections will have the opportunity to address voters during a May 23rd event at the Union County Courthouse.

The non-partisan event will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, in the circuit court room on the second floor of the courthouse.

All New Albany municipal candidates, whether opposed or unopposed, may make remarks, and audience members will have the opportunity to submit questions.

Three city offices have candidates from both the Democratic and Republican parties on the ballot:

Incumbent Democrat Mayor Tim Kent is being challenged by Republican Jeff Olson, who currently serves as Ward One Alderman, having been elected as a Democrat.

The open Alderman at Large seat on the city board pits Democrat Larry Dykes against Republican Keith Conlee. Neither has previously served in New Albany elective office. The open seat was created when incumbent Democrat Alderman at Large Scott Dunnam decided not to seek re-election.

However, Dunnam ran in the Democratic primary for the Ward One Alderman position, which Olson is giving up to run for mayor. Dunnam won his party’s nomination and faces Republican Amy Livingston in the general election. Livingston has not previously run for New Albany city office.

Municipal candidates without an opponent in the general election will also be able to speak during the May 23rd event. They include:

Incumbent Police Chief Chris Robertson, a Democrat, who has no Republican opponent on June 6th.

Incumbent Ward Two Alderman, Johnny Anderson, a Democrat with no Republican opponent on June 6th.

Incumbent Ward Three Alderman Kevin Dale White, also a Democrat with no Republican opponent.

Incumbent Ward Four Alderman Will Tucker, a Republican, without a Democratic opponent in the general election.
