Museum offers free Preservation Workshop, May 8-10
Preservation workshop:
Want to tackle that daunting rehab project but not sure where to begin?
Join the Mississippi Heritage Trust and instructors Mike Grote and Jonathan Leit with Alembic Community Development of New Orleans to learn about the fundamental principles of historic preservation and real estate finance. In additional to sharpening their pencils to master real estate calculations, participants will work with seasoned developers to learn how to assess the development potential of historic buildings and explore successful rehabilitation projects. A key component of the workshops will be helping participants understand how incentives like tax credits are used to close the funding gap and save historic places.
The workshop will kick off at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8 with a discussion about the legal framework for historic preservation at a local, state and federal level. Starting at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, Mike Grote and Jonathan Leit will present case studies of successful historic rehabilitation projects. Friday, May 10, participants will get out and explore current and potential tax credit projects in New Albany.
The Preservation Toolkit Workshop will be held at the Union County Heritage Museum, 114 Cleveland Street. Thanks to funding from the Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area, there is no charge for the workshop.
