New Albany High School (NAHS) is pleased to announce that it has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2019–2022 for its 1:1 iPad technology initiative.

Apple Distinguished Schools are centers of innovation, leadership, and educational excellence that use technology to inspire creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. They showcase innovative uses of technology in learning, teaching, and the school environment and have documented results of academic accomplishment.

“New Albany High School is such a forward thinking and innovative school. The teachers, administrators, and staff at NAHS are extremely talented educators who choose to be different on purpose,” explained Robert Garrett, Director of Technology and Innovation for New Albany School District.  “I am thrilled that Apple has recognized NAHS as one of the most innovative schools not just in our state, but in the world.”

NAHS implemented iPad in 2015 in an effort to prepare our students for the world of technology. Throughout this process, all NAHS teachers have become Apple Certified Teachers.

Learning at NAHS is no longer confined to the walls of a classroom. Classrooms are now collaborative learning environments where students share ideas and learn from each other as well as the teacher. Assignments are delivered and submitted online. Classes use the same platform as many colleges in the area so the technology in college is a seamless transition for students.

The use of iPad is an integral part of the school day for all subject areas and learning needs.  This technology has expanded opportunities for extensive research, group- based learning projects, and online learning platforms, all of which are crucial to 21st century and college success.

Having a learning environment where every student has their own iPad allows for other online and technology-based learning options such as Mastery Connect, Khan Academy, Keynote, GarageBand, and other unique opportunities.

The use of text to speech functions have been an important component that was easily added for students who need additional support in reading and language-based lessons and activities.

“The selection of New Albany High School as an Apple Distinguished School highlights our continued academic success where our students are in impressive learning environments being challenged as they prepare for success in college and careers,” said John Ferrell, Principal of New Albany High School.  “I am proud of the hard work by our teachers over the last five years to make New Albany High School truly a 21st century learning environment.”

“New Albany School District is committed to ensuring students are provided with a learning environment supporting innovative learning practices,” said Lance Evans, Superintendent.  “We are honored that our high school is among an elite group of educational institutions earning the distinction of Apple Distinguished Schools.”
