NAPD car chase: stolen car suspect arrested, officer slightly injured

A New Albany Police Department (NAPD) officer was injured, and two NAPD  vehicles  were damaged as officers arrested a stolen car suspect after a high speed car chase on I-22 Wednesday night.

The episode started around 8 p.m. when the NAPD received a tip from the Mississippi Highway Patrol about a car, believed to have been stolen in Georgia, approaching New Albany from the west on the interstate.

An NAPD officer fell in behind the suspect vehicle, and the driver accelerated after observing the police cruiser following him. A high speed chase ensued along I-22 east, and the suspect exited at the Blue Springs exit. In a dangerous and bungled attempt  to escape capture, the car thief got back onto I-22, but going east in the westbound traffic lanes.

NAPD officers were able to stop the wrong-way stolen vehicle and make an arrest. The suspect vehicle caused minor damage to two police cars, and one officer sustained what NAPD Chief Chris Robertson described as a sprained wrist during the incident.

The stolen car suspect, D’Angelo Lewis, age 23, was arrested and is being held in the county jail, said Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards.
