New Albany senior participates in Leadership Institute

,

New Albany senior Katie Davis got a terrific opportunity this summer.

Out of over 300 applicants, she was chosen to participate in the University of Mississippi’s Summer Leadership Institute for High School students.  The 23 students came from seven states and Mexico.  They lived on campus for four weeks, taking Political Science 101 and Public Speaking 102 for college credit, as well as participating in evening activities with other high school students in the Ole Miss Summer College program.

After completing their final exams, the Lott students took a week-long trip to Washington D.C., where they toured the Capitol and national monuments, and the museums of the Smithsonian Institute.  They attended church at the National Cathedral and served two days in a soup kitchen.

They met with leaders from the public and private sectors, including the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, the Republican Governors’ Association, and Google.  Each student was able to meet with a Senator from their home state and the Congressman representing their district.
