New Haven Center addition taking shape

The addition to New Haven Center for Special Needs Adults is slowly taking shape.

The new wing will provide larger handicapped-accessible restrooms and a large multi-purpose area. Plans had included adding a kitchen but officials decided they could expand the existing kitchen and save a considerable amount of money.

What started as a school to provide for about a dozen special-needs children in the 1950s has grown into a service for close to 40 adults, while mostly having to operate in the smaller space as originally constructed.

The center gets some government support but relies heavily on contributions. In fact, one reason the construction has not moved faster is that much of the work is being done on a volunteer basis.

The center is on Garfield across from the Northeast at New Albany community college campus.
