Officers end 100+ mhp, three county car chase at West Union

,

A car chase that reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour and ranged over three counties ended near West Union School with three arrests Thursday.

Sheriff Jimmy Edwards said they first became aware of the situation when a call came in about a black Infiniti traveling east at over 100 miles per hour on I-22.

“Marshall County didn’t have a unit close so Benton County officers got involved and spotted the car at Hickory Flat,” he said.

The chase continued until the suspects turned off on County Road 515 and continued to Hwy. 30 West. “They jumped across 30, went to County Road 46 and back to 30,” he said.

“We were all closing in but at that point the Benton deputy lost sight of them,” Edwards said. “We expanded our search and then EMA Director Curt Clayton was on County Road 14 and spotted them turning around in a yard.”

Clayton radioed the information and officers were able to shut down Hwy. 30 at West Union School, where the suspects were stopped without further incident.

A search of the car turned up marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a loaded Glock 9 mm handgun.

Martavious Garrett, 20, of Memphis, was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell or distribute. He was later free on a $50,000 bond.

Kayla White, 19, also of Memphis, was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Tia Wilkins, 18, also of Memphis, was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Sheriff Edwards said a fourth individual in the vehicle was not charged.

“Since we were never in direct pursuit we will not charge them with felony fleeing,” Edwards said. “That would be up to Benton County.”

No charge was mentioned concerning the weapon.

No injuries were reported in the incident and Edwards said it is not clear why the suspects were driving so fast in the first place.
