Officials investigate fire Friday morning at 307 Monroe Street in New Albany
The New Albany Fire Department (NAFD) answered a fire call to a duplex at 307 Monroe St. about 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21.
NAFD 1 was about two blocks away when the call came to 911 reporting heavy smoke and fire coming from a window.
The apartment was heavily damaged by smoke and fire. No one was at home in either side of the duplex and there were no injuries.
Because fire fighting personnel were in a training meeting a few blocks from the fire, a quick attack with extra manpower brought the fire under control rather quickly.
The local temperature was 24 degrees F and the wind chill index was 21 F degrees at the time of the fire.
The fire is being investigated by the NAFD, the New Albany Police Department (NAPD) and the State of Mississippi Fire Marshall.
Less than 48 hours earlier, at about 10 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, law enforcement officers from both the NAPD and the Union County Sheriff’s office responded to a call at the 307 Monroe St. address. Officials told NEMiss.News Wednesday night that the complaint was “a prowler.”
