One person dead in a train-involved incident in New Albany
UPDATE 9-21-24 2:43pm – New Albany Police Chief Chris Robertson has identified the victim as James Ward, 19, of Potts Camp. Police believe Ward crossed the tracks while taking a shortcut. No foul play is suspected.
About 2:00 p.m. on 9-19-2024 New Albany Police and New Albany Fire Department (NAFD) responders were on the scene the intersection of Highland Street and the railroad crossing. Several emergency responder vehicles were parked near the intersection, but the incident did not occur at that spot.
An incident involving one person and a train occurred on the tracks east of the Highland St. intersection, toward Highway 15.
Union County Coroner Pam Boman confirmed to NEMiss.News that one person was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the victim and the exact circumstances of the death are currently unknown.
The NAFD turned the scene over to the New Albany Police Department. Police Chief Chris Robertson states that the incident is currently under investigation by NAPD.
