Othella Elizabeth Rush Gaines, 96

August 26, 1928  –  January 19, 2025

Othella Elizabeth Rush Gaines, affectionately known as Othella, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2025, at the age of 96 in Blue Springs, MS. Born on August 26, 1928, in Union County, MS, she was a beacon of love and faith throughout her life.

Othella was the cherished matriarch of a large and loving family. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Samuel Gaines, her father, Marion O. Rush, her mother, Ordie I. Chunn Rush, her beloved son, Harold Gaines, all of her siblings, one grandchild, and three great-great-grandchildren. Her legacy continues through her adoring children: daughters Barbara Thomas, Rebecca Murry (Larry), Dana Pickens (Terry), and sons Lester Gaines (Linda), Kenneth Gaines (Betty), David Gaines (Sandra). She was a proud grandmother to 42 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren, who will carry her memory in their hearts.

A dedicated homemaker, Othella’s greatest joy was cooking for others, a love she expressed through countless meals shared with family and friends. Her culinary skills were only matched by her nurturing spirit, as she cherished the time spent babysitting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Othella’s creative talents shone through in her sewing and quilting, crafting beautiful pieces that will serve as treasured keepsakes for generations.

Othella’s interests extended beyond her home. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, such as sitting on her front porch and engaging in word-find puzzles, activities that reflected her contemplative and serene nature. Her commitment to her faith was unwavering, and she was honored to be the oldest living member of Liberty Baptist Church, where she found strength and community.

Those who knew Othella would describe her as loving, creative, and faith-filled. Her presence was a source of comfort and inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to cross her path. Her influence extended beyond the walls of her home and church, touching the lives of many with her kindness and grace.

Othella’s life was a testament to the power of love and the strength of family. Her spirit, a blend of compassion and creativity, will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
