Guest speaker for the luncheon is Professor Michael Megelsh, PhD, Blue Mountain Christian University. His topic is Pirates of the Mississippi: Riverine Piracy and America.

Mississippi River pirates were a real and colorful part of the river’s history, operating primarily from the late 1700s to the early 1800s. They targeted flatboats and other river traffic, using caves and islands as hideouts, and their exploits were often romanticized in stories and literature.

The luncheon and annual awards is free to members and Community Partners of the Society. Registration is required to get an accurate luncheon count. Please call or email the museum to register at 662-538-0014 or email uchm@ucheritagemuseum.com by June 24th.

Dr. Megelsh received his B.A. Edison State College, his Masters at Liberty University and his Doctorate at Auburn University.

Megelsh was awarded the 2023 BMCU Humanities Teacher of the Year. His research focuses on history, particularly the Civil War and Reconstruction era. He recently published a book, Adelbert Ames, the Civil War, and the Creation of Modern America.

The annual membership drive is currently underway for the Society. Memberships run annually from June 1 through May 31. “We welcome all who are interested in supporting our mission to research, preserve, educate, and interpret the history and culture of Union County. “

For the past 34 years, many of you have stood with the Union County Historical Society—through building campaign donations, membership dues, and the generous gift of your time and talents. “We are deeply grateful. Your continued support has enabled the Museum to play a vital role in our community—preserving heritage, enriching lives through education and cultural programming, and contributing to the quality of life for all who visit,” said Jill Smith, Museum Director.

“As we launch our 2025-2026 Membership Drive, we invite you to renew or begin your membership with the Historical Society and Museum. Your support allows us to remain a safe, welcoming, educational, and creative space for all ages. Now more than ever, your membership is essential to our work, “she said.
