Sandy Gillis, 91

June 3, 1935 – June 10, 2026

Alabama – Mary Sandlin Phyfer Gillis, 91, passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at The University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital. She was born June 3, 1935, in New Albany to Sisco Knox Phyfer and Rachel Sandlin Phyfer.



After graduating from high school, she attended Blue Mountain College, where she earned her teaching degree. She began a fulfilling career teaching freshman mathematics and literature at the high school level, inspiring countless students through her love of learning and dedication to education. Later, she chose to devote herself fully to her family as a stay-at-home mother, providing unwavering care, guidance, and support. Although she stepped away from the classroom, her passion for academics never faded. In her sixties, she returned to higher education at The University of Alabama, where she earned both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in literature, demonstrating her lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth.

She was a faithful member of Vestavia Hills Baptist Church where she served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. She was also an active member of the Vestavia Hills Garden Club and enjoyed the fellowship and friendships she found there. Above all, she loved her family deeply and treasured every moment spent with them.

Sandy is survived by her two children, Benjamin Knox Gillis and Daniel Paul Gillis; five grandchildren, Amy Kathryn Gillis, Benjamin Knox Gillis, Jr., Katherine Claye Ahmed, Daniel Luke Gillis, and George Peyton Gillis; two sisters, Leah Sloshberg and Anita Franklin; and one great-grandchild, Easton Knox Gillis; And numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sisco Knox Phyfer and Rachel Sandlin Phyfer; and one brother, Robert Phyfer.

A private graveside service honoring her life will be at New Albany City Cemetery. Pegues Funeral Directors has been entrusted with the care of her arrangements.
