Senate holds vote-a-thon to pass Trump’s budget bill by July 4

After weeks of horse trading, Senate Republicans are now holding a vote-a-thon To pass amendments to the version of Trump’s budget bill passed weeks ago by the House. Trump has set Congress an ambitious goal of having the massive legislation ready for him to sign this Thursday, July 4.

Yesterday, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released its report on the Senate version of the bill. The CBO concluded that the bill as currently written would add $3.3 trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade. That is nearly $1 trillion more than the House version. The highest price-tag item is $3.8 trillion resulting from the extension of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, from which the wealthiest Americans will reap the lion’s share of the benefit. Congressional Republicans are leaving this cost out of their balancing calculations.

To offset (but only in small part) the costs of this huge loss in tax revenue, Republicans looked for ways to cut spending on programs that benefit the poor, including Medicaid and SNAP. Like the House version, the Senate bill seeks new work requirements for Medicaid recipients as well as more frequent eligibility checks. The CBO predicts that if the bill becomes law, 11.8 million more Americans will be uninsured by 2034. This is nearly 1 million more than the House version of the bill.
