Senior Citizens Day sees reduced participation as drive-through

The Union County Fair’s Senior Citizen Day was different this year, thanks to COVID-19 safety concerns.

Senior citizens usually gather in the Ladies Building, hear useful information about financial matters and health, have a free meal and play Bingo.

Because social distancing would not be possible in the building, organizers made the event a drive-though this time.

Event sponsor BancorpSouth still had information, as did Baptist Memorial Hospital and Home Care Hospice. Those who came were given sack lunches with hamburgers, chips and cookies.

Attendance was down, possibly due to the absence of Bingo, the drive-through nature of the event, or remaining caution concerning COVID-19.

Next year, with COVID concerns gone, it is hoped, the program can return to its previous form inside and with Bingo.

Stephenie Hodges and Nancy Kidd provided information about health.

Stephanie Nichols and representatives of Home Care Hospice also had information about their benefits.
