Stories From the Cemetery & the Cradle Gardens is the focus of Museum Moments on August 15, 2024, 12 noon at the Union County Heritage Museum.

Kim and Willy Bearden, Executive Director and Photographer of Elmwood Cemetery, will tell about the history of many of the residents of the cemetery as well as how they are “resurrected” in the programming done at the cemetery. The history of Memphis is told through the stories of the Elmwood residents. A tour of the cemetery is an entertaining journey into the past.

“What a great job is being done at Elmwood Cemetery. It is remarkable what a cultural oasis this is for the city in so many ways,” said Jill Smith, Museum Director. “The cradle gardens, the writing contests, The Soul of the City events, the Costume Twilight Tours and so much more are inspiring to those who appreciate the stories and individuals that shaped our communities in our cemeteries.”

As an added feature to the program, Willy Bearden, the writer of several historical books and filmmaker will briefly talk about his newest book “Mississippi Hippie: A Life in 49 Pieces”. Well known for his documentaries and books, he is also a familiar voice on WKNO, NPR, and other stations. He has produced films for the Grammy Museum, for the Elvis Presley Birthplace, the Cotton Museum and the Union County Heritage Museum Sports Exhibit.

The public is invited to attend this free event. The Union County Master Gardeners will provide a light lunch. For more information call 662-538-0014.
