High School Students Successful on ACT Career Readiness Assessment

One of the goals for the New Albany School District’s Strategic Plan is to “Prepare all students to be college and career ready”. For two years, the Career & Technical Center at New Albany High School (NAHS) has worked to help prepare students for the ACT WorkKeys assessment.

This assessment helps measure foundational skills required for success in the workplace, as well as helps to measure the workplace skills that can affect job performance.

There are three components to the WorkKeys assessment: Applied Math, Graphic Literacy, and Workplace Documents. To earn a Career Readiness Certificate (CRC), students must score at least “3” on the three required assessments.

Dependent of their scores on each assessment, students are placed at different levels of certification:
Bronze: Required Score of 3
Silver: Required Score of 4
Gold: Required Score of 5
Platinum: Required Score of 6

During the spring of 2017, 144 students received the national CRC, with 19 at bronze level, 90 at silver level, and 35 at gold level.

During the spring of 2018, 69 students received the national CRC, with 32 at bronze level, 24 at silver level, twelve at gold level, and one at platinum level.

During the Fall 2018 semester, several students enrolled in Career and Technical Education classes were selected to take the WorkKeys assessment based on scores from placement tests and classroom success.

In addition, students participating in internship programs such as the IMPACTO program took the assessment. The IMPACTO (Industries as a Means to Prepare for Academic, Career, & Technology Opportunities) program is an innovative, pilot program which provides career readiness classes to students and prepares them for a summerinternship. Students who wish to participate in the IMPACTO summer internship program must score a silver or above on the WorkKeys.

“This school year NAHS has the unique opportunity to offer internships for junior and senior students through programs such as IMPACTO, Gateway, and Toyota’s ‘Creating Your Future’”, explained Suzy Bowman, Career Coach. “We are excited that all of these internship students will participate in the WorkKeys assessment and receive Career Readiness Certificates as a part of their programs.”
