Supervisors discuss increased work needed on Co. Road 46 bridge

A bridge being rebuilt on County Road 46 will require more work than was originally expected.

District Two Union County Supervisor Chad Coffey told the board at its Monday, August 8th meeting that pilings supporting the bridge are in worse shape than had been believed. The contractor discovered the badly rotted pilings after doing some of the demolition work on the old bridge structure. Working with the county’s consulting engineer, the board will have to change the work authorization on the bridge in order to deal with repair and replacement of the pilings.

In other business at its Monday morning meeting:

• Deborah Yates with S.A.F.E., a domestic violence center that serves nine north Mississippi counties, thanked the board for its past financial support. Yates said her organization also provides temporary housing assistance to families facing eviction and to homeless persons, who are single. Board President Randy Owen told Yates that he believed S.A.F.E. could count on continued financial support in the coming fiscal year.
• The board approved a resolution amending the tax exemption for Diversity VUTEQ for 2013. Chancery Clerk Annette Hickey said the amendment was necessary because of a clerical error in the original exemption authorization.
• The board intends to switch all courthouse telephone service, including fax numbers, to CSpire. Work on the new contract was discussed. The board will meet again at 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 10th, for further discussion of the telephone service contract
• Owen said the county was going to establish its own operation for producing “cold mix” for road repairs. The board authorized a request for supplies for the cold mix operation.
