Texas AG sues county clerk in New York for refusing to take action against abortion provider

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against Taylor Bruck, an acting county clerk in Ulster County, NY, for refusing to impose fines on an abortion abortion provider. Last year, the State of Texas accused Dr. Margaret Carpenter of mailing abortion pills to patients in Texas in defiance of the state’s near-total ban on abortions. When Dr. Carpenter did not show up for a court hearing in Texas, a judge imposed over $100,000 in penalties.

Bruck has twice refused to impose those penalties after requests from Paxton’s office. New York has “shield laws” to protect health workers in their state against prosecutions brought by other states for providing abortion services.

The case, which pits conflicting state laws against one another, is likely to wind up before the Supreme Court eventually.

NY shooting: Gunman may have been targeting NFL offices but went to wrong office

Yesterday, a man identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas entered a Manhattan office building, gunning down four victims before finally taking his own life.

One of the victims was an NYPD officer Didarul Islam, originally from Bangladesh. Islam was in uniform working private security in a decades-old program. The other three victims have been identified as Aland Etienne, a private security worker; Wesley LePatner, an employee of international investment firm Blackstone; and Julia Hyman, who worked for Rudin Management. Hyman was killed on the 33rd floor of the building while the other three victims were killed in the building’s lobby. An unnamed NFL employee was also seriously injured.

It appears Tamura intended to target the headquarters of the National Football league, which is located in the same building, but took the wrong elevator. Tamara played football in high school and left behind a note indicating that he believed he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). CTE is a disease found in patients who have suffered repeated concussions or head trauma, and is believed to be common in athletes. Although he never played for the NFL, Tamura appears to have nursed a grievance against them. He had a history of mental illness, which he blamed on CTE.

CTE can only be diagnosed after death in an examination of the brain tissue. Authorities say Tamura’s brain will be examined for signs of the disease.
