Two dead after apparent robbery attempt in Mantachie

According to published sources, two women are dead in the aftermath of what is being termed an attempted robbery at the Farmers & Merchants bank in Mantachie.

Bank teller Judy Guin died from wounds after being shot by a lone female who, according to Itawamba County Sheriff Chris Dickinson, entered the bank with a gun drawn, fired multiple times, shooting Guin.  The shooter is identified as Ashlee Smith, 28, of Pontotoc. She reportedly fled the bank empty handed, taking no money from the bank.

Lee Itawamba County Coroner Shelia Summerford confirmed the victim died from a single gunshot wound. A second bank teller was present at the bank, but was not injured.

County Sheriff Jim Johnson  reports that his office was called at 10:42 AM for assistance in the incident, and that the shooter had fled in a black Tahoe, westbound on Highway 363.  A Saltillo officer pursued the suspect and made contact with the Tahoe at a traffic stop on Highway 363.

“A Saltillo officer made contact with the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. As the officer approached the vehicle, he heard a single gunshot, ” said Johnson.  Johnson  stated that the female suspect died in Lee County from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
