One arrested, others sought in Union Co. shooting incident

Update 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 24.
The Union County Sheriff and multiple other law enforcement agencies are at this time still seeking one or more white males who fled the scene of a shooting incident on County Road 102 in the southern part of Union County. A law enforcement helicopter and other assets are still actively in use. Sheriff Jimmy Edwards has confirmed that his deputy was not struck by the gunfire that occurred earlier. More details will be posted here as they are available.
An attempted traffic stop by a Union County Deputy Sheriff resulted in a high-speed chase and multiple gunshots fired in the southern part of Union County this morning.
Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards said one of his deputies attempted a traffic stop mid-morning today. The vehicle, an SUV with Desoto County tags, pulled over and stopped. The deputy exited the Union County Sheriff’s Office (UCSO) vehicle and, as he moved toward the SUV, it sped away. A chase at speeds in excess of 100 mph ensued. During the chase, occupants of the pursued vehicle threw out multiple objects, one believed to have been a screw driver, in an apparent attempt to strike and disable the UCSO unit.
The automobile chase ended when the driver of the SUV wrecked that vehicle, which overturned on County Road 102. The driver exited the SUV and pointed what is believed to have been a sawed-off shotgun at the deputy, who fired numerous rounds at the man with the shotgun. That man, and perhaps one other, fled on foot.
One man remained in the vehicle and was taken into custody.
The nearby Ingomar campus of the Union County Public School District was put on what the school superintendent described as a “soft lockdown,” and was guarded by law enforcement personnel.
It was first believe that one person had run away from the SUV, but according to Sheriff Edwards, the subject taken into custody said two white men had left the wrecked SUV  and run away.
