Unveiling of the Red Hill Rosenwald School Marker is set
The public is invited to the unveiling of the Red Hill Rosenwald School Historic Marker on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, 11 a.m. at the Red Hill Community Center at 1127 CR 195, Blue Springs, MS.
Built in 1921, The Rosenwald School at Red Hill educated students for 40 years. It remained open through 1961. Students were then bussed to B.F. Ford School in New Albany and other locations.
Julius Rosenwald, chair of Sears, Roebuck and Company in Chicago, donated funds to the Tuskegee institute in 1912 and authorized Booker T. Washington to use the money to build schools in rural Alabama. Lee Armstrong heard about the initiative and by that time the Julius Rosenwald Fund had been established, which would cover one third of the cost of building a school. The remainder of the money came from the community with families pledging money to cover the other two-thirds.
After the school closed, the building became a community center for the area. It burned, and a Red Hill Community Center was built. This is where the marker will be placed.
The Mississippi Department of Archives and History Historic Marker for the Rosenwald School is sponsored by the Union County Heritage Museum. The public is invited to attend this unveiling. For more information call the museum at 662-538-0014.
