Government offices will close Wednesday, Veterans Day

Governmental offices and a few businesses will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day.

Garbage collection will not be affected in the city or county.

No community commemoration is planned for Wednesday but schools are said to be considering virtual programs.

A community program will be held in the form of a Veterans Luminary Trail Saturday, however.

This event, sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary Unit 72, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tallahatchie Trails, the road leading to the tennis and soccer complex. The drive-through program will be accompanied by special music played on WNAU 1470 AM.

Students in grades K-5 in all area schools will be decorating about 3,000 luminary bags provided by the American Legion Auxiliary.

The luminary trail is also a fundraising event for auxiliary ongoing projects for local veterans as well as those in the VA home in Oxford.
Anyone willing to help can purchase a set of red white and blue luminary bags $20 to honor a veteran. Larger donations will come with other benefits and recognition. Donations also will be accepted at the end of the route.

Checks for contributions should be made payable to ALA Unit 72. Anyone who is interested in volunteering or who has any questions is asked to contact Windy Green at 601-503-3574 or Heather Whittington at 662-316-5295.
