Videos, Minnesota officials dispute ICE account of fatal Minneapolis shooting
Yesterday, an ICE agent taking part in Trump’s anti-immigrant crackdown in Minneapolis, MN, fatally shot a female motorist in a residential neighborhood. The victim, Renee Nicole Good, 37, was a US citizen, a mother of three, and the widow of a US veteran. She had just dropped off her 6-year-old son at school before her fatal encounter with ICE. The Trump administration, including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, claimed that the agent shot Good in self-defense after she rammed him with her car. However, local officials, witnesses, and videos from the scene tell a different story.
Videos showing the encounter from several angles have revealed the following. Good’s vehicle was parked diagonally across part of the residential street for at least three minutes before the shooting. Why is not clear, but other vehicles can be seen parked at odd angles. Then ICE agents rushed her vehicle, with one reaching for Good’s driver’s side door handle. Good first backs up her vehicle and then angles the car away from the officers and attempts to drive away. Then a masked officer pulls his gun and shoots into the vehicle as Good drives past him. Good’s car then crashes. The agent is then seen walking away, apparently uninjured. He has since been identified as Jonathan Ross.
Videos that have emerged so far do not show Good’s vehicle making any contact with the agent. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, who arrived on the scene shortly afterward, told CNN that ICE agents informed him no one else was injured other than Good. Despite this, Trump claims that the agent was “viciously” run over. He added “It is hard to believe he is alive, but is now recovering in the hospital”.
Reaction and protests
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey rejected federal authorities’ claims of self-defense, calling it “bullshit”.
Despite federal authorities initially promising a joint investigation, local and state investigators now say they are frozen out of the investigation. Minnesota Gov. Mike Walz said he is doubtful of a “fair outcome” in the federal investigation. In truth, it is unlikely the agent would face any legal consequences even if local and state investigators were working the case.
A day after Good’s killing, protests are now raging across Minneapolis. Gov. Walz has put the Minnesota National Guard on stand-by to assist local and state law enforcement.
