Wanda Faye Payne Matthews, 73
March 8, 1952 – October 7, 2025
Plantersville-Wanda Faye Payne Matthews, after a lingering illness, met her Creator on Tuesday evening, October 7, 2025, from her longtime Plantersville residence. She was 73 years old. Born in Tupelo on March 8, 1952, to the late Bro. Marion Payne and Inez Mathis Payne, Wanda lived her whole life in Plantersville. After graduating from East Union High School in 1970, she married her late husband, Larry A. Matthews on May 23, 1970, a marriage of 36 years until his death on March 26, 2007. She spent her earliest years as a stay-at-home Mom, raising her two children and supporting her husband. Wanda was very intelligent, with a creative mind and quite the entrepreneur. She did not fear labor, was a master public seamstress and later owned her own restaurant, Matt’s in Plantersville, which she operated many years. Her hobbies were numerous including painting, inventor, enjoying arts and crafts, her flowers and gardening. She was an avid Ole Miss Rebels football fan and the matriarchal caregiver for her own family, the Payne’s and Matthews, always by their side in time of need. Wanda was a longtime member of the Brewer Baptist Church-Plantersville. She was a simple but independent soul whose mark on her family and others will be her cherished legacy.
A service celebrating her life will be held at 2 PM Friday, October 10, 2025, from the Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel at Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo with her brother, Bro. Donnie Payne officiating. Family members will be sharing reflections. Burial will follow in the Matthews family plot at Plantersville Cemetery. Visitation will be from Noon-service time Friday only. Wanda leaves behind her two children, Allen Matthews II, and Tosha Matthews both of Plantersville; two grandchildren, Larry Allen “Trey” Matthews III (Lakin) of Plantersville and Robert Matthew “Rob” Parker of Courtland, Virginia; two great grandchildren, Addilyn Haze Matthews and Larry Kash Matthews; her siblings, David Payne (Ann) of Sherman, Kathy Lee (Terry) of Blue Springs and Donnie Payne (Charlotte) of Northport, Alabama; several nieces, nephews, cousins including her Matthews in laws and her Payne family.
Pallbearers will be Trey Matthews III, Punkin Matthews, David Parker, Adam Cullum, Hunter Chappell, Jimmy Hutcheson and Judge Kelly Mims. Honorary Pallbearers will be Rob Parker.
