What have we learned a week after Epstein files release?
Last week, the Department of Justice released over 3 million new documents from their files on the late financier and child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Also included in the release were about 2000 videos and 180,000 images. News outlets have spent the past 7 days trawling through the massive file dump in hopes of uncovering new and revealing insights about Epstein and those in his orbit.
Some may be surprised or disappointed to know that, so far, nothing has been unearthed that concretely ties anyone but Epstein himself and his convicted co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell to Epstein’s sex crimes. However, the picture that has emerged from the documents is in many ways just as disturbing as the globe-spanning sex trafficking ring that many imagined. What the documents have revealed with startling clarity is just how Epstein was able to get away with his abuses for so long and how many were persuaded to turn a blind eye.
The thousands of emails and other documents have revealed Epstein’s intimate connections to the world’s wealthiest and most influential people.
Who is in the files?
More was revealed about Epstein’s relationships with several of his known close associates, including President Donald Trump, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Trump advisor Steve Bannon, director Woody Allen, Former British ambassador Peter Mandelson. However, the files also revealed Epstein’s relationships with figures who had, up to now, received little or no public notice. They include Virgin-Atlantic founder Richard Branson, Swiss bank CEO Ariane de Rothschild, self-help author Deepak Chopra, moral philosopher Noam Chomsky, and Google co-founder Sergey Brin. Embarrassing for some, including Elon Musk and Trump’s current Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, the record of their communications and relationship with Epstein directly contradicts their public denials.
Epstein had high-level contacts on nearly every continent and in nearly every sphere of public life, from business, to politics, to entertainment, to academia. Many of these people continued to communicate, visit, and do business with Epstein long after he was first convicted as a sex offender. Emails reveal prominent men asking Epstein to set them up with women or speaking about the results of these encounters afterwards. Other times he was providing generous financial assistance or helping people invest their money (using info gleaned from his extensive contacts). He was also more than happy to arrange meetings and create connections among his friends.
Epstein’s ability to make the desires of those in his circle a reality won him an immense amount of influence among a network of prominent people who were in his debt in one way or another. Many did not shy away even when Epstein was convicted of sex offenses. Some even downplayed, made light of or even sought to justify Epstein’s abuses.
