Willie Pearl Fortune, 96

April 11, 1928 – October 20, 2024

Willie Pearl Wells Fortune passed away peacefully on October 20, 2024, at the age of 96 in New Albany, MS. Born on April 11, 1928, in Union County, MS, to the late Jessie Wells and Clara Bell Harris Wells, Willie Pearl lived a life marked by love, generosity, and kindness.

Willie Pearl’s journey began as the cherished daughter of Jessie and Clara Bell, growing up in the warmth of a close-knit family. Her life was a tapestry of love and dedication, woven through the years with the threads of family and service. She was a beacon of strength and love for her eight children, Margaret Lipford (Billy Carl), Bonnie Dodge (Mark), Kathy Windham, Cindie Frappollo, Jim Fortune (Brenda), and Jerry Fortune (Elaine). Her legacy continued to flourish with her ten grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immeasurable joy.

The memory of her deceased son Johnny Fortune, daughter Janie Fortune Evans, brother Preston Wells, sister Elizabeth Wells, son-in-law Paul E. Frappollo, Sr., and an infant granddaughter remains a tender part of her story, as each of them held a special place in her heart.

Willie Pearl’s work ethic and community spirit were evident throughout her career. She retired from Mohasco Furniture Mfg. and later brought smiles to countless faces as a door greeter at Wal-Mart. Her presence at the store was not just about welcoming customers but also about spotting and buying deals, a testament to her sharp eye and love for a good bargain.

Her interests were as varied as they were passionate. Willie Pearl found solace in the pages of a good book, expressed her creativity through crafting, and cultivated beauty in her garden, tending to flowers and plants with a tender hand. Shopping on QVC brought her the simple pleasure of discovering new treasures, while her volunteer work with Meals on Wheels showcased her commitment to giving back to the community.

A lifelong advocate for health and well-being, Willie Pearl donated blood many times, understanding the profound difference such a simple act could make in the lives of others. Her love for nature was evident in her enjoyment of bird-watching, an activity that allowed her to marvel at the wonders of the world around her.

Willie Pearl was a true people person, never meeting a stranger. Her ability to connect with others was one of her most remarkable traits. She greeted every person with a warm smile and an open heart, embodying the essence of hospitality and friendship.

Her loving, generous, and kind nature will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Willie Pearl’s impact on the world was as beautiful and enduring as the gardens she so lovingly tended. Her spirit, characterized by warmth and generosity, will continue to bloom in the hearts of her family, friends, and all the lives she touched.

She was a member of Calvary Methodist Church, where she was the last surviving member of the Hope Sunday School Class.

Willie Pearl Wells Fortune lived a full life, rich with experiences and filled with love. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary woman, we celebrate the legacy she leaves behind—a legacy that will continue to inspire and guide us.
