Homeland Art category winners announced at Chickasaw Celebration

On Tuesday April 18th, the Union County Heritage Museum and the Chickasaw Inkana Foundation, along with other partners presented Chickasaw Celebration, a program honoring the Chickasaw Nation’s history, culture and continuing influence upon North Mississippi, its sacred Homeland.

As a part of the Chickasaw Celebration, a Homeland Art category was added to this year’s high school art competition. The category drew much interest as students drew inspiration from their Homeland to produce artwork in drawings, paintings, ceramics, etc. Student art filled the halls and walls of the museum. Winners of the Homeland Art category were announced during the Celebration.

In a special tribute to the Chickasaw Nation, local potters gifted the tribe with pottery pieces fashioned from local clay, recovered from the Chickasaw’s sacred Homeland.

The students’ Art display will remain available at the Union County Heritage Museum through May 2nd.

Homeland Art Category winners from Union County Schools are:

• 1st Place winner for her drawing Native is Madison Baker , East Union High School
• 2^nd Place winner for his work Tribal Wolf is Robert Richardson, Ingomar High School
• 3^rd Place goes to Lidia Solis, East Union High School for her  pen and Ink drawing of  Treebird
• Honorable mentions for her Ceramic Piece – Chickasaw – goes to Kortney Parker of Ingomar High School
• To Lidia Solis from East Union High School for  her acrylic painting Loksi
• And to Carmen Fuentes from Ingomar High School for her ceramic piece –Unconquered

Homeland Art category winners from New Albany High Schools are:

• 1^st place with her watercolor painting Four Ways – New Albany High School Student Cecelia Garcia
• 2^nd  for Possum – acrylic painting by Laken Ivey
• 3^rd  for Homeland Native pen and Ink by Madison Graham
• Honorable Mention For Flying Snakes Tube goes to Shakara Steele New Albany High School
• Honorable Mention goes to  Sam Cagle  for his Alligator Gar Gourd
