“Going back to Baltimore” armed robbery

Deloiran Shields told New Albany police Monday morning, July 6th, that he was trying to get together the money to go back to Baltimore.

His means of attempting to raise the money is likely to take him on a detour through the Mississippi Department of Corrections on his journey back to Maryland.

Wearing a mask, Shields walked into a mechanic shop just north of downtown New Albany, on Snyder Street, about 10 a.m. Monday. He allegedly threatened an employee with a .38 caliber derringer handgun, and demanded the man’s money.

He got the money, but not for long. A short time later a nearby resident called police and said a man appeared to be hiding in the resident’s garage.

NAPD arrived immediately and found Shields and, in his possession, a palm-sized derringer, and a sum of cash equal to the amount stolen from the victim. They arrested Shields without incident and booked him into the Union County jail, pending armed robbery charges.

Apparently Shields, originally from Baltimore, had been living in Horn Lake for some time, and recently got married in Oxford. He has recently been staying at an address on Meadow Drive in New Albany. According to his statement, Shields was enrolled at the New Albany campus of Northeast Mississippi Community College and had noticed the shop on Snyder Street on his way to and from classes.

New Albany Police Chief Chris Robertson said the quick arrest was an example of New Albany residents being fully involved in the community and quick to act responsibly to help police with their work.

“I give the community all the credit for this quick arrest of a dangerous individual,” said Robertson.
