Arts council will offer four arts and crafts workshops

The Tallahatchie Arts Council is making available some arts and crafts instruction classes over the next couple of months.

“We’re excited about the upcoming year,” TAC member Susie Brown said. “Some of the upcoming classes include melded glass, wood carving, beginning watercolor painting and thrown pots on a pottery wheel, to name a few.”

“Not only are we looking to provide different and interesting classes but looking at more outreach for children,” she continued. “Jill (Union County Heritage Museum Director Jill Smith) and I had the opportunity to meet earlier with one of the local home schooling groups. We want to understand what needs they have to fulfill art needs their children might have. We also have plans to outreach to the Boys and Girls Club.”

The current president of TAC is Jane Weingarten.

The first class is Intro to Pottery: Handbuilding with Shelby Toole.

Students will learn the beginning of all things ceramics as they build a base of foundational techniques as they make functional pottery such as pinch pots, trays and bottles.

The class will be Jan. 30 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Art House, 205 Highland, and the cost is $35.

Next will be a Bob Ross Technique Class taught by a Bob Ross certified instructor, Deanna Washington Gregory.

This class will be Saturday, Feb. 1, from 9:30 a.m. until done, sometime mid-afternoon. There will be only 10 spots in the one-session class. Cost will be $45 and all supplies including a 16×24 canvas will be provided.

The third class will be How to Take a Better Photograph with Heather Tisdale.

Topics covered will include introduction to fundamentals, landscapes, portraits and architecture. Participants will need to have a DSLR camera, digital snap and shoot or smart phone with USB connector.

The class will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 4, 11, 18 and 25 at the Union County Heritage Museum with a makeup day March 3.

Finally, a Beginning Chip Carving class will be Saturday, Feb. 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Art House, 205 Highland St.

Cost is $30 and materials will be provided, although students should bring a basic chip carving knife.

Knives will be available for use during the class and some also will be available for sale at a cost of about $30.
