Fugitive from domestic violence incident turns himself in to NAPD

The man who fled the scene after beating a woman Friday has turned himself in to the New Albany Police Department (NAPD).

NAPD Chief Chris Robertson informed NEMiss.News that Tyrone Preston Bell turned himself in mid-afternoon today, Tuesday, May 17.

Law enforcement officers has sought to arrest Bell since the incident in which he allegedly attacked a woman in the 800 block of East Bankhead St., shortly before noon on May 13.

At the time the incident occurred, both New Albany Middle School and New Albany High School were having “field day,” so a lot of students were outside. The police chief put both schools on “soft lock down,” which means all students go inside the locked building and the School Resource Officer and other law enforcement personnel are especially alert to anyone approaching the campus.

It was at first believed Bell had a gun, but it was determined that was probably not the case. The soft lock down lasted about 30 minutes. The chief said soft lock down is a precautionary measure, as both schools are not far from where the assault occurred.

Chief Robertson said Bell voluntarily turned himself in today to his parole officer in Pontotoc. The Department of Corrections (DOC) parole officer put him in an automobile, drove him to New Albany and turned him over to the NAPD.

Bell is originally from Bruce in Calhoun County, but now apparently lives in Pontotoc.

Robertson said Bell had been served warrants for the Domestic Violence incident, for Failure to Appear and some other misdemeanor charges.

Bell is now lodged in the Union County Jail.
