Deputy escapes serious injuries in Wednesday wreck

A Union County deputy sheriff and another driver escaped serious injury in a two car wreck Wednesday afternoon, February 24.

Deputy Sheriff Avery Adair was responding to an emergency call when the vehicle he was driving collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Highway 15 and County Road 101, the Ingomar Road. Sheriff Jimmy Edwards said Adair was running with lights and siren when the accident occurred about 12:45 p.m.

Both drivers were transported to the hospital, but neither had life-threatening injuries.

Sheriff Edwards said the sheriff’s office vehicle, a 2014 Ford Explorer SUV, was a total loss.

A little less than two months ago, another sheriff’s office SUV was totaled in a single-vehicle accident on Highway 178 just south of Myrtle. Deputy Sheriff Adam Fitts received serious injuries Christmas Day morning when the Chevrolet Tahoe he was driving left the roadway while northbound on “old 78.”

Deputy Fitts suffered multiple fractures of his collar-bone and has not yet been able to return to active duty.
