Music, Food and Fitness: Spring Fever Stroll is tomorrow

spring-flowers-yellow-daffodils pub domainThe daffodils (or jonquils for the more old fashioned) are blooming and Spring is definitely springing in New Albany and there are a number of new and returning events for folks to enjoy.

Jimbo Mathus at The Basement – Saturday, March 19

Jimbo at the Basement 682484-250Mississippi native Jimbo Mathus has a storied history in music, coming first on the national scene in 1993 with The Squirrel Nut Zippers, a swing revival group that garnered gold and platinum records as well as appearances at a number of prestigious ceremonies and events including A Prairie Home Companion, the second inauguration of Bill Clinton, the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and a number of late night television shows including Conan, Letterman and Leno.

Through the mid- to late 2000s, Mathus performed hundreds of shows in the deep South, mostly in Mississippi. He became a regular and favorite performer at Morgan Freeman’s Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, Mississippi

Jimbo and his band will be playing at a small crowd show (only 80 tickets available) at The Basement music venue (the basement of the Henderson Building – 100 E Bankhead) on Saturday, March 19th. Downtown New aLBANYSpring Fever Stroll: A Progressive Pairing Progressive Dinner – Saturday, April 2

Food and drink pairings, as well as live music, will be theme of the night which takes place at three different venues downtown. Participants will start with an appetizer and drink pairing at the Bankhead Bicycle Club at 6 pm and then stroll to the Tallahatchie Gourmet for an entrée and drink pairing at 6:45. After dinner, live music and a dessert pairing will begin at The Basement at 7:45. The evening includes three food and drink pairings at three separate, walkable, venues and live music! The First Choice Race for the Unborn – Saturday, April 9

The 7th annual 5K Race for the Unborn-3K Walk for Life Event benefiting First Choice Center for Women will take place on Saturday, April 9th, at 8:30 am in downtown New Albany. Race Start will be on Bankhead and the route will include downtown, Park Along the River and the Tanglefoot Trail. Registration forms may be picked up at First Choice or register online at www.racesonline.com. Race day registration will begin at 7 a.m. at the Trailhead. Cost is $25 which includes a t-shirt.

Garden showNew Albany Home & Garden Show – Saturday, April 9

The New Albany Home & Garden Show is moving downtown this year. “Rolling into Spring” will be April 9th in downtown New Albany around the courthouse and at the historic Cine Theater.  On deck for the show are an antique tractor show, talks by the “Garden Mama”, Nellie Neal, author Laurie Parker and the “Cooking Divas”, Shelaine Pennington and Romona Edge. Plus, many vendors, demonstrations and overall great ideas for decorating your home. Additionally, SuperTalk Mississippi will be broadcasting live from the event.
