Mississippi Hills Heritage & Folk Life Fest returns October 22-24 – Don’t Miss It
Union County Heritage Museum’s ever-popular event Mississippi Heritage Hills Days, saluting early pioneer settlers, returns this weekend, October 22-24. Come Celebrate and learn learn about those who long ago lived, worked, and played in the hills and hollers of this part of Mississippi.
As always, the first two days of the Mississippi Hills Heritage Days are dedicated to students in special needs classes, as well as for elementary school classes from New Albany, Union County and other area schools. Saturday is Family and Community Day from 9am -2pm.
There are always many fascinating, fun family activities to fill the day. There will be a wide sampling of activities that made up the every-day lives of early homesteaders. Most of the crafts that our generation enjoys for their pleasure and beauty had their beginnings many years ago as a way of providing daily necessities of life to early settlers. A variety of local/ regional artisans will be on site demonstrating crafts like quilting, spinning, weaving, basket making, broom making, etc. that were necessary skills, producing items essential to daily life. Woodworking, blacksmithing, churning, washing clothes, etc. consumed many hours every day. All of these activities will be on display and many will present opportunities for visitors to participate in some of these daily “chores” of pioneer life.
There will be sack races, corn shelling, spoon & egg races, cross cut sawing, a stick horse rodeo and many other activities, to participate in. Some will even have prizes. Watch for the contests beginning at 11 am. There will be a one room school, a doctor’s office, a country store and more to visit.
Live folk music, story telling (featuring Betsy Ross) and old time dancing will be going on throughout the day, and there will even be pumpkin carving to help sharpen your Halloween skills.
Broom making, soap making, basket weaving, period photography and blacksmithing will be demonstrated by
Museum Director Jill Smith, the Museum staff, and many volunteers invite the community to attend this day and enjoy a slice of “old timey” life.
This is a free event, open to the public.
The museum is located at 114 Cleveland St., New Albany, MS 38652.
