Union County 3rd Annual Juneteenth rescheduled to Thursday June 19
Union County’s 3rd Annual Juneteenth Freedom Celebration has been rescheduled for Thursday June 19th at 5PM. It will be held in the Ladies Building at the Fairgrounds in New Albany.
The original Juneteenth celebration was cancelled earlier this month because of weather. An event had been held in Shady Dell Park on Friday June 6th, but the Main event was cancelled due to severe weather on Saturday June 7.
The Juneteenth Freedom Celebration will be held on June 19th at 5 PM at the Ladies Building, 112 Fairground Circle, in New Albany.
President Joe Biden made Juneteenth an official federal holiday in 2021 with the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It celebrates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, first learned of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Most federal offices and services are closed on Juneteenth, including post offices and federal banks.
