Erin Austin Abbott: Using individual creativity to grow small towns in positive directions

NENiss.News Erin Abbott discusses Small town Living

Author Erin Austin Abbott spoke at the August Museum Moments program on Thursday, August 21, 2025 . A large crowd was present to learn more about something all New Albany residents navigate on a daily basis – life in a small town.  Abbott lives in Water Valley, with about 3400 residents, compared to New Albany’s 7700 or so. Mississippi is rich in small towns, all vying to prosper and set themselves apart from the others. The optimal outcome will create a community that maintains its original desirable qualities as it grows.

Abbott, who grew up in Oxford, MS, spent her early adult life “globe-trotting” through major cities before choosing small town life. As a freelance writer, photographer and travel blogger, she has authored three books, Small Town Living, Family Field Trip, and How to Make It, with additional work in various other publications.

In her extensive travels, Abbott sought out and learned from creative people in small towns throughout the country who have used their own talents and energy to develop their communities. In her presentation, Abbott gave many examples of “creatives” who led their communities to grow in positive directions. (see video of presentation below; Q&A begins at time stamp 31:00)

As all small town citizens know, choosing that life style involves continuous weighing of its advantages with its disadvantages. Larger cities have more employment opportunities, more shopping choices, more cultural and entertainment choices, etc. Small towns offer less congestion, lower cost of living, a slower-paced lifestyle, closer community ties, easier access to nature, etc.

Migration data and Gallup surveys show a significant increase in the desire to live in a small town or rural area, with preferences rising across various demographics. Especially since the COVID pandemic, there is increased desire to work remotely, and growing appeal for closer-knit communities.

It is Erin Abbott’s personal hope that small towns learn to grow in positive ways that satisfy both their long time residents and their newcomers. That is very likely the prayer of most small town dwellers.
