Israel jeopardizes Iran ceasefire by continuing strikes on Lebanon
Tuesday evening, a two-week ceasefire was announced between Iran, Israel and the US, bringing at least a temporary end two over 5 weeks of war. According to Iranian officials, the Iranian 10-point framework will form the basis of negotiations, though the US has already said they will not accept some of the conditions. Key points of Iran’s proposal include:
-
A permanent cessation of US and Israeli military aggression against Iran.
-
Iran will retain control over the Strait of Hormuz. A safe passage agreement will be enforced by Iran and Oman.
-
Iran will be allowed to continue enriching uranium under IAEA guidelines, but with guarantees against pursuing a nuclear weapon.
-
Lifting of all US economic sanctions against Iran.
-
Termination of UN resolutions against Iran (to ensure sanctions cannot be unilaterally reimposed).
-
Withdrawal of US combat forces from the Middle East.
-
Reparations to Iran for war damages (likely to be collected through a toll imposed on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz).
-
Release of frozen Iranian assets abroad.
- A UN Security Council resolution ratifying the agreement.
-
Cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon.
Israel claims ceasefire doesn’t apply to Lebanon; Iran responds
One of the mediators, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, confirmed on Tuesday that a cessation of fighting in Lebanon was part of the agreed framework. However, within hours of the agreement being announced, Israel launched its most brutal bombing campaign against Lebanon since the war began on February 28. The bombing continued on Wednesday, with 254 people confirmed killed in Lebanon so far.
Contradicting the position of the mediators, Israel claimed that the ceasefire did not apply to its campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon. After the fact, President Trump said publicly that the US also does not acknowledge Lebanon as part of the ceasefire.
In response, Iran has once again closed the Strait of Hormuz, accusing Israel of violating the terms of the ceasefire by continuing its military action in Lebanon.
