Mildred Topp Battle, 100
August 9, 1925 – April 24, 2026
Mildred Topp Battle was born in Pontotoc County, MS, August 9, 1925. She is the fourth child of Willie J. Topp and Erene Woods Topp. She grew up in Palmetto C.M.E. Church, graduated from George Washington Carver High School, Tupelo, MS, and Mississippi Industrial College, Holly Springs, MS.
She taught two years at Booneville High School, under Principal, Dr. J. Y. Trice, before moving to Washington, DC to work in the Federal Government. In DC she became a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and a Class Leader. She also served as Assistant Girl Scout Leader. She married Alphonzia Battle, and three children were born: Janet, Michael, and Wendelle.
After retiring from the Federal Government, she returned to Mississippi and reunited as a member of Palmetto C.M.E. Church. She served as a Local Church Secretary, Local Missionary President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. She served as Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer of North-East Mississippi Conference Women’s Missionary Society. She served as President, Secretary, and Treasurer of Aberdeen-Tupelo District Women’s Missionary Society. She spearheaded the organizing of Palmetto Senior Citizens Ministry.
Her community service: RSVP, America Reads Program, Boys and Girls Club After School Program, worked at the polls for City and County Elections, AARP Tax-Aide Counselor, and Secretary of Tupelo Area AARP Chapter # 433.
She was preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings.
She leaves behind three children, Janet Battle (Tupelo, MS), Michael Battle (Forest Park, OH), and Wendelle Battle (Wilson, NC); three grandchildren, Marcus Battle (Fairfield, OH), Carl Battle (Greenville, NC), and Taylor Battle Reyes (Miguel) (Raleigh, NC); and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
