Sam Shephard’s “True West” to feature a New Albany actor

Susan Hickman, of New Albany, is part of the small cast starring in Theatre Oxford’s upcoming production of True West, a play written by playwright Sam Shepard. True West, first performed in 1980, is described as a classic family drama, and deals with the deterioration of the relationship between two brothers, one a screenwriter, the other a thief and drifter. Hickman stars as the brothers’ mother.

Attending the play will be a somewhat unusual experience, as the play will be performed by a small cast in an intimate setting  (only 75 audience members), designed to make the audience feel more a part of the high-energy production. The play is presented in a “thrust format,” which means that the set goes out into the audience and is not up on a regular proscenium stage.  This gives the audience more emotional connection to the action.

Sam Shephard, perhaps more widely known for his successful acting career, is also credited with being an outstanding playwright, having written over 40 plays and received recognition as a master American dramatist. True West was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1983.

True West will be the last main-stage production of the season for Theatre Oxford, and is scheduled to run from April 15th to April 17th at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center in Oxford.
