Michael Clark Thompson, known affectionately as Mike, passed away on September 16, 2026, in New Albany, Mississippi, leaving behind a life marked by faith, resilience, creativity, and devotion to family.
Mike was born on October 20, 1961, in Fort Benning, Georgia, to Carroll D. and Kay Cook Thompson. He and his brothers were often called “Army Brats” because their family moved from one Army base to another during his father’s military service. Those years of travel helped shape the character of a man who learned early how to adapt, connect with others, and appreciate the many places and people that became part of his life story. Throughout his life, Mike carried with him the values of perseverance, loyalty, and strength that were rooted in his upbringing.
Mike was a Christian who accepted Christ as his Savior, and his faith was an important part of who he was. He enjoyed biblical discussions, especially conversations about salvation, and he spoke with sincerity and conviction about what his relationship with the Lord meant to him. He was not quick to judge others, and he often reminded those around him that there is good in every individual, even if it takes a little more effort to see it. That outlook reflected the compassion and grace with which he approached life and the people in it.
Education was important to Mike, and he was a graduate of William-Carey College, where he earned his Bachelor of Nursing Degree. His commitment to helping others was evident not only in his studies but also in his professional life and personal interests. He had a deep concern for individuals struggling with addiction to drugs and alcohol. Having worked in a drug rehabilitation center and having faced addiction in his own life, he understood the painful effect it can have on families and friends. He never hesitated to speak openly about his successful recovery, and his honesty offered hope and encouragement to others who were walking a similar path.
Mike was a man of many talents and interests. He possessed unique musical and artistic abilities, and he taught himself to play both the guitar and the piano. His creativity was one of the many qualities that made him memorable to those who knew him best. He was also an avid Ole Miss fan, and he took great pride and enjoyment in following his team. In addition, he loved growing watermelons, a pastime that reflected both his patience and his appreciation for simple pleasures.
Those who knew Mike will remember him as a passionate and creative man whose life was shaped by faith, family, and a genuine concern for others. He had a way of speaking that was thoughtful and direct, and his words often carried wisdom gained through experience. He valued honesty, understood struggle, and believed in the possibility of redemption and growth. His life was a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of extending kindness to others.
Mike is survived by his parents, Carroll D. and Kay Cook Thompson; his brothers, Dean Thompson and his wife Terri, Mark Thompson and his wife Tammy, and Ricky Thompson and his wife Ronda; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; and a very special Aunt Tish. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Willie and Ada Cook, and Joseph and Nannie Thompson.
Michael Clark Thompson’s life touched many people in meaningful ways, and his memory will be cherished by all who loved him. His legacy of faith, creativity, and compassion will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Services to honor his life will be Monday, September 21, 2026, at United Funeral Service with Bro. Mark Nail officiating. A visitation will begin at 11:00 am until time of service. Burial will be in the Ebenezer Methodist Cemetery.
