Betty Altom, 91

January 16, 1932 – November 19, 2023

Verona – Ms. Betty Lauderdale Altom died Sunday, November 19, 2023 at Methodist Senior Services – Tupelo Campus, Mitchell Center. She was born January 16, 1932 to Irene Davidson Lauderdale and Mel Lauderdale at Troy in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. She was a 1949 graduate of Pontotoc High School. She had lived in Verona and Tupelo area since 1950. Betty’s working career started with the Highway Commissioner, Roy Adams, as stenographer and lasted until the birth of her only son, Steve. Then she was a devoted stay-at-home mother and house wife until Steve started kindergarten. April 11, 1960, she was employed with Central Electric and Machinery Co., later known as Jesco and retired July 4, 1994, after 34 years as office manager and bookkeeper.



Betty loved being with her friends and family. Her hobby was spending time in her yard. For several years, she was awarded “Yard of the Month” for her beautiful grass and flowers. She loved living her last years at Traceway Retirement Community with her many friends. She has been a member of Verona First Baptist Church since June, 1963.

Survivors include her precious great-grandchildren Zoey and Hayden, whom she dearly loved; one sisters, JoAnn Estes of Mooreville; a number of special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Steve; granddaughter, Jessica Altom Jones; her parents, two sisters, Melna Hattox, Ruth West of Jackson and their husbands, and one niece.

A service celebrating Betty’s life will be at 12 PM, Saturday, December 2, 2023 in the Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors. Private burial will follow in Lee Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 10 AM to service time (12/2/2023) only.

Honorary pallbearers will be her nephews and great-nephews.
