County Supervisors handle routine matters, discuss logging issue
New Albany, MS- The Union County Board of Supervisors met for less than 30 minutes, Monday, Dec. 5, its first meeting of the month.
The board conducted routine business including paying the bills, approval of the road department work schedule, and approval of the November board minutes. The board also approved election commissioner claim forms, approved registrar fee payments to the circuit clerk’s office, and
approved medical examiner fees.
The board unanimously approved hiring Steve Clayton in the road department and approved James Kyle Dodd for part-time work as a dispatcher in the sheriff’s department..
District Three Supervisor Dave Kitchens and Fifth District Supervisor Steve Watson were appointed to examine and view proposed county roads.
After the board had worked its way through its 20-item agenda, board attorney Chandler Rogers brought up an item not on the agenda. Rogers said John Haynes wants to have some timber cut on land he owns, which is accessed by CR 294. Based on examination by county engineers there is doubt as to whether an old bridge on CR 294 has sufficient strength to bear the weight of loaded log trucks.
Rogers recommended that Haynes and/or his logging contractor be a required to post a $100,000 bond to pay for any damage that might be done to the bridge while the logs are being hauled out and that they also be required to sign a binding agreement promising to pay for any repairs the bridge may need.
