DOJ investigating Memphis Police brutality months after Tyre Nichols’ death

Earlier this year, footage of several Memphis police officers brutally beating a young man as he cried for his mother shocked even those who’ve become sadly accustomed to such incidents. The young man, Tyre Nichols, died in a hospital of his injuries several days after that incident. Five MPD officers, all Black, were charged with his murder.

Months later, the Department of Justice is opening an investigation into the Memphis Police Department. This probe isn’t necessarily connected with Nichols’ death, but is based on allegations of heavy-handed policing from other members of the community. Among other things, the DOJ will be investigating allegations of discriminatory targeting of Black people in Memphis as well as numerous accusations of officers needlessly escalating incidents and using unwarranted violence against citizens.

The current head of MPD, Cerelyn Davis, is herself a Black woman. However, before becoming Chief in Memphis, Davis had participated in and even spearheaded task forces in other departments which earned brutal reputations, particularly against Black people.

New charges for Trump in classified documents case

The Justice Department has announced new charges in the criminal prosecution against Donald Trump for his improper retention of classified documents. Trump and Walt Nauta, an aide and co-defendant, were already facing 37 charges in this case.

The new charges concern attempts to conceal evidence and Trump’s possession of a certain document. In addition to Trump and Nauta, a third person has been indicted – Carlos De Oliveira, the head of maintenance at Mar-a-Lago. According to the new indictment, Trump had asked two of his employees, including De Oliveira, to delete surveillance from Mar-a-Lago after the DOJ had subpoenaed it.

Trump’s lawyers also met with special counsel Smith’s office today concerning a pending indictment against Trump in another matter. An indictment is expected imminently over attempts by Trump and others to interfere in the certification of the 2020 election.
